Welcome to the Northport Elementary Library Media Center!

The Northport Elementary Library Media Center supports the Alabama State Course of Study, the basis of our school curriculum program, and its publication "Alabama's Library Media Handbook for the 21st Century Learner" as we as "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs," published by the American Association of School Librarians and the American Library Association.  In addition, the NPES Library Media Center endorses the literacy principles of the 2008 Standards for the 21st Century Learner of the American Association of School Librarians.

Mission Statement

The Northport Elementary Library Media Center is committed to providing quality print and electronic resources while fostering information literacy skills through effective research and retrieval as well as developing a lifelong love of reading.

The Northport Elementary Library Media Center provides open access for all students.  The Library Media Center uses Destiny, a Follett Software product as its automated management system.  Destiny provides TitlePeekTM, which gives students a chance to preview books on-line;p and One SearchTM, which lets students get information from the school library and the Internet as a whole with a single search, and WebPath ExpressTM, which limits students searches to approved, grade-appropriate websites.  Finally, teachers are able to align lesson plans using Destiny since the Alabama State Course of Study Standards are included in the web-based program.  Teachers and students have access to Desiny at home via the Internet.

I realize students have only a limited time to look for great books that will grab their imagination and rouse their love of reading, so I try to make visiting our LMC a pleasant and stress free experience.  To assist students in finding a book on their level, I have color-coded dots on the spine of Accelerated Reader test books.  Students may also access Destiny, our library catalog, from home to search for great books.
